Christmas: A Beautiful Complexity
ORIGINS OF THE BEAUTIFUL ANCIENT TRADITION

I think most people can agree that there’s something incredibly beautiful about Christmas.
So, have you ever sat down and really thought about it? Like,
really
thought about it?
All the traditions, feelings, emphasized beliefs, etc. are a combination of humankind's most cherished values, and these values are seen throughout all of history.
For example, the Christmas tree…
Have you ever stared at a Christmas tree and thought it through? We put brightly wrapped packages under a heavily decorated evergreen tree along with a small stable home to an adorable Middle Eastern family. Then, we encourage our children to be good so a man (by many names) brings them gifts. But why? What historical foundation combined all these seemingly different elements to create a symbol beloved by millions around the world?
Well, obviously, Christmas began with the story of Jesus’ birth, which in my mind is the most important element of Christmas. It also proves that no matter what happens, Christmas will always matter because the meaning isn’t tangible. It’s a hopeful state of mind that you can carry with you all year long.
Right, Charles Dickens? That’s right!
So, when Christians began to convert others to the ideas of following Christ, they had to get creative. Think about when you teach someone something. It is easiest when you can relate the material to something they understand, right? So, that’s exactly what the early Christians did when trying to spread Christianity. They used symbols and analogies to explain the beauty of Jesus and his coming to the earth.
Now, how does Christmas prove the beautiful diffusion of Jesus’s life world wide?
Let’s take a look…
Presents in December - Did you know that the Romans celebrated a holiday in December where they gave close friends and family homemade gifts to show how much they loved each other? LOVE and FAMILY = JESUS
Evergreen Trees - Did you know that the Northern Europeans (specifically, the German people) had a holiday on the Winter Solstice where they would celebrate the darkest day of winter with lights amongst a forest of evergreen trees? LIGHT = JESUS
Santa Claus - Did you know the idea of Santa is a combination of stories about a man who changed the lives of people by giving selflessly to the poor to share hope and light in the darkness, especially a Greek man by the name of Nicholas? CHARITY = JESUS
Now, the realization that Christmas is a combination of pagan ideas and early Christian beliefs might concern some people. However, I think it’s truly beautiful and what God loves to see. Here we have a holiday that celebrates God’s direct interaction in people’s lives in many forms.
Christians, determined to bring Jesus to people around the world, were able to find Jesus everywhere even before they’d explained Him to the people they were attempting to convert. They found him in the light festivals of the Northern Europeans, the family values of the Romans, and the charity of mankind.
So if you really think about it, Christmas is a celebration of the positive history of mankind, and the true values on which we as a species can all agree. The reason the idea of Jesus was easily applicable to people of all cultures and a holiday was easily created out of all the positive beliefs of the world is because Jesus represents all that is good in this world. He represents the innate virtues of mankind: hope, joy, love, charity … and most of all … COMPASSION!
So, instead of seeing all our differences and fighting for the right of your own holidays and traditions, we should be celebrating the fact that the world is jointly celebrating the beauty of Jesus and His love in endless forms!
MERRY
